Joe Skipper - Ironman Championships Kona
LUKE SPORT Ambassador Joe Skipper Came sixth at the Ironman Championships in Kona. Read a summary of the event in his own words.
I’m really pleased with my result in kona. My swim got me out of the water with all the strong cyclists so I was in a pretty good position. It would have been nicer to have been up the road but at least I was in the thick of the action from the off with the strongest cyclists in the race. I was 5 minutes off 1st place exiting the water.
My bike was great, I managed to ride a 4.16 bike split despite a puncture with 5 miles to go. This was within a minute of what I managed last year in tougher conditions.
I got off the bike in 11th place due to the puncture I got with 5 miles to go. This put me on the back foot starting the run as I was around 90 seconds behind the pack and 5 minutes off first place.
I was able to do a pretty solid run and run my way up into 6th place by the end.
It was my best result in Kona but I can already see ways how I can improve for next year. I don’t think I had my best race out there so next year I’ll be looking to get a bit fitter and feel better on race day so I can get myself onto the podium!
