A WARDROBE STAPLE
The Sweatshirt was originally designed as an alternative to American football jerseys in the 1920s. Later, becoming popular with American students in the 50s and 60s, where the word Sweatshirt was coined - named for its use in athletic activities, where it absorbed sweat during games and practices.
The modern Hoodie, as we know it, was invented way back in the 1930s, made for the University of Michigan’s football team. The design was also marketed to workers and labourers as something to help them keep warm.
By the 1970s, both Hoodies and Men's Sweatshirts had become a central part of hip hop culture, athletic wear, and would later become the streetwear staples we know and love in the early 2000s. At LUKE 1977, our Sweatshirts and Hoodies stay true to the values Luke Roper laid out when he started the brand in the West Midlands over 20 years ago. The entire range features signature LUKE details, such as our lion logo or wordmark, so when it counts, trust the lion.
