As the name suggests, the Polo Shirt has its roots in the sport of polo in the 19th century. Soldiers stationed in Manipur, India, observed local polo players wearing lightweight, breathable shirts with collars, which were an innovation suited to the region's hot climate.

When the sport was brought back to Britain, they found the collars would flap due to the wind, and so the button-down polo was invented, which is largely considered the first modern version of the polo shirts we wear today.

By the mid-20th century, the polo shirt had evolved from a sportswear-only style to a versatile fashion staple. It was embraced by youth subcultures, Hollywood icons, and even heads of state, becoming synonymous with both athleticism and casual dressing.
